REST Training & Dysphagia Team Building

The videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is an essential part of the dysphagia evaluation. Unfortunately, this assessment is often performed in a way that dichotomizes the oropharyngeal and esophageal “phases” of swallowing. There is a need for implementation of a standardized and robust esophageal screening to inform providers of the next steps in dysphagia management. In addition, the close partnership of MD and SLP are essential for optimal patient care. This course covers the importance of multidisciplinary dysphagia care, how to implement and engage a team, advanced esophageal anatomy and physiology, and how to conduct the REST protocol.

Moving Onward and Downward: Implementation of the REST Course

Course Objectives:

  1. Discuss the importance of and indications for comprehensive swallowing assessment including the visualization of the esophagus in several patient population.
  2. Describe a clinical pathway to building a multidisciplinary dysphagia team.

  4. Apply use of the REST (Robust Esophageal Screening Test) protocol live, for immediate application the next workday.
